Lech Walesa, Poland's first democratic-era president shocked the political public with his announcement, when the Nobel peace prize-winner said gay people had no right to a prominent role in politics. The first press reactions focused only the local importance of the retired president’s horroristic manifestation, reporting that the national committee devoted to fighting hate speech and other crimes in Poland has filed a complaint with prosecutors in Gdansk accusing Lech Walesa of promoting a "propaganda of hate against a sexual minority".
Anyway there can be another interesting aspect of Walesa’s words. This statement may be in connection with the pope electoral process. He is a well known deeply conservative Roman Catholic politician, with a strong connection to the leader clergy of the Roman Catholic church, so he could have been asked to say something hard about gays, which can strengthen the conservative cardinals’ position in the conclave.
The electoral process of the new pope can produce some exciting turns yet…
