David Cameron's statement was mentioned in the previous post of this blog piqued the interest of the gay community comprehensible, but leaders of British Catholic Church commented it as well. The latter, of course - following the official Vatican direction - condemned the prime minister's position, saying “the state must not attempt to redefine marriage”. This declaration is thoughtful itself, because it immediately raises the following question: who wants to “redefine marriage”? The British Prime Minister five years ago confirmed that he insisted the official position of the majority of Christian denominations: marriage is between a man and a woman. What has happened since that time? Had he perhaps forgotten what he had told that time? By a Hungarian report from this congress of British Conservatives David Cameron evoked his words himself, and announced that his point of view has changed. What could make him to do so? By his own explanation it was the recognition of the force to solve the contradictions to dominant conservative values: accepting traditional definition of marriage versus supporting of ties that bind people based on commitment to each other by the help of political means regardless whether those are heterosexual or same-sex relationships. The sceptics obviously do not like to hear this explanation and they consider this change only a cheap political popularity effort, to fit into the "sinful" social fashion mainstream of present society. However it is an own goal for traditional conservatives because it just highlights that it is not the policy who redefine marriage, but some people, a part of the citizens do it (regardless how many percent of people, which was not understandable that senile conservative preacher, who has trouble with the basics of percentage calculation). That is why policy-makers are absolutely obliged to provide the equal rights for those who want to live their life in a same-sex partnership.
But let's get back to even for a moment the question of conservative values! Conservative politicians, it is often stressed that conservatism is value-based political trend and it has to insist the traditional values. It provides handrails for those, who want to gain their aims “taking the tram” of conservative policy. Undoubtedly, the need for handrails because all vehicles rank braking starts, that one who does not cling, can fall, or may fall down through the open door. (Off: that is true, the "number of passengers" can be preserved closing the "doors of the vehicle" carefully – as is usually characteristic of left-wing parties, in which quite extremely strong party discipline can be occur – but in the "no handrails vehicle" the very broken "passengers" will finally burst open by radical means the "vehicle" as it is now seen in the Hungarian Socialist Party as well.) The handrails, however, are not enough alone. People can cling strongly vain if the tram goes wrong and stop, or simply start to reverse. No one reaches the purpose so. In this case there are two possibility for passengers: getting out and taking another vehicle (it is now visible in Hungary where the “tram” of right-wing governor parties has gone wrong in many aspects and many “passenger have got out”, more than one million voter changed their preferences since the last election which was hold on may 2010, anyway there are sustained people who stubbornly cling to "handrails" which are the most important for them), or realizing of the problems by the driver, or the operator of the vehicle and trying to correct it. It seems that the latter solution has been chosen by the British Conservatives. They didn’t threw out every values and even strengthened those “handrails” which were durable, but did not adhere to those things, which have revealed that some people "deterred from the taking on", like those handrails, which were put into the middle of the stairs in the old omnibuses in Budapest, deterring the insertion of strollers into the vehicle. It is therefore necessary to decide all the "drivers and operators" what their main aim is: helping the most people to achieve some common goals, or stubbornly adhere to those old traditions, which has been shown to not stand the test of time and which exclude more and more people from the achievement of common objectives.
